Phoenix,
Arizona.
Elevation 1,200 feet. Exiting
from Sky Harbor International Airport, the highway is entirely controlled
access. In fact, we will encounter no traffic lights for the entire
trip into the Sedona area. About
90% of the total trip is on the Interstate.
The first short stretch of
freeway north from the airport is on the Piestewa
Peak Parkway. Views to the left
from here (west) show the downtown Phoenix high rise financial district.
The massive but relatively low building on the south is the
48,500 seat Chase Field, opened in
1998, and home of the Arizona
Diamondbacks
professional
baseball team.

The facility features a retractable roof, natural grass, and a reservable seating section with a swimming pool/spa next to the bullpen. This unique "Party Pool Pavilion" has a capacity of 30-35 persons, and has two fountains which, after a Diamondback home run, shoot water 60 feet high. Next to the ballpark, the adjacent lower square building is the 19,023 seat US Airways Center, opened in 1992, home of the Phoenix Suns and Phoenix Mercury professional basketball teams. Phoenix is one of only 8 cities nationwide that field professional teams in all four major sports – football, hockey, baseball, and basketball.
We
quickly transition west for a short stretch onto Interstate
10.
The Hance
Park Tunnel marks the last section of Interstate 10 completed from the
California coast to the Florida coast. Above
is a city park named for the long-time former mayor of Phoenix, Margaret T.
Hance. The $70 million
state-of-the-art tunnel, opened in September, 1990, bristles with electronic
traffic monitors. 750-horsepower
fans can generate up to 70 mile-per-hour winds, used to clear out fumes, smoke,
and flammable gases.
